Basketball is a high-energy action sport. People love to play it and love to watch it. But sometimes injuries occur while playing. Some of the most common injuries are sprained ankles, broken fingers, and torn ligaments. While you can’t avoid all injuries, here are some tips on what you can do to avoid many of them.
First, be sure that you wear the proper shoes. Do not use lightweight Keds without any tread. They will not support your ankle or give you the traction that you need for quick starts and stops. Never play with your shoelaces untied and flopping around. You’re bound to step on them and trip. And, don’t play basketball in sandals, open-toed shoes, or flip-flops.
Consider wearing a mouth guard. This helps injuries to your mouth and guards against broken teeth. If you wear braces, ask you orthodontist what type of mouth guard would be best.
Make sure that you stay in good shape and are within your normal weight limit. This will improve your stamina, your center of balance, your coordination, and your endurance. Do exercises that strengthen your knees.
Before the game starts, make sure that you do stretching exercises that stretch your hamstrings and calves. Run in place for few minutes to warm up. And of course shoot some baskets and do some layups.
While you are playing, pay close attention to where your teammates and the other players are. This will help you avoid unnecessary collisions. And, make sure that you drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
